Designability-Wizzybug – FREE powered mobility for under 5’s.
Organisation Logo Introducing Wizzybug!
Wizzybug is a fun, innovative powered wheelchair provided FREE of charge to young children in the UK by Designability a charity based in Bath.

Who is Wizzybug designed for? Wizzybug is designed for physically disabled children. This includes children living with cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida or muscular dystrophy, as well as children with amputations or other conditions that affect their ability to walk.
Wizzybug is intended for pre-school children of minimum age 14 months and a maximum weight of 20 kg.

How can Wizzybug be used?Wizzybug is an electrically powered wheelchair for indoor and outdoor use, with adult supervision. Children use Wizzybugs at home and at pre-school, and in outdoor spaces such as parks, gardens and playgrounds.
Wizzybug can be used every day or just occasionally, but is not intended to be used all day, every day. Through the loan scheme a child can have a Wizzybug for as long as it is suitable for them (usually until they outgrow it) when it is returned to Designability to be refurbished ready for another child to enjoy.
How can I apply? Families can apply for a Wizzybug direct via the application on the website. Appointments are held at our HQ in Bath, and at our partner clinic at William Merritt Centre, Leeds.
Our clinics are open Monday – Friday 9-5pm. They have disabled parking, disabled access and baby changing facilities. All our trained OTs have enhanced DBS clearance and our admin and support staff have basic DBS clearance.

Down Syndrome support group
Organisation Logo Children’s Therapy wanted to extend the early intervention provision for children with Down’s Syndrome. Through co-production, a monthly group for babies and children aged 6 months to 4 years & their families was created.

Initially, Children’s Therapy liaised with the Lincolnshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group (LDSSG) and its members to create several focus groups. Feedback from this process supported the design of the groups to suit the families.

The groups, based in Children’s Centres for a more relaxed feel, allow families to meet with representatives from the three therapies (Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy) each month.
Their child’s development and next steps to work on are discussed. Changes have been made along the way in response to additional feedback from the current attendees. The groups have given the parents/carers confidence in supporting their child and have allowed for peer support as well as guidance from professionals. Each month, an early year’s theme is used to introduce children and parents to a range of information including: evidence-based research and programmes to support children with Down Syndrome, vocabulary and Makaton signs, exercises to support fine and gross motor skills.

Dyslexia Sparks
Organisation Logo Dyslexia Sparks was founded in August 2016, with a mission to support dyslexic individuals across the Hull and East Yorkshire region, born out of a passion for helping people reach their potential and find their inner SPARK. It’s a charity which is built on many years’ experience of understanding the barriers dyslexic individuals face, and a desire to ensure they can overcome these challenges.

Dyslexia Sparks provides diagnostic dyslexia assessments to children and adults aged 7+. They also provide specialist tuition support at their centre in Hessle, East Yorkshire.

Dyslexia Sparks works closely with schools to advise them on how to best support dyslexic learners, as well as providing dyslexia assessments to inform specific adjustments or additional support. Sparks also offer teacher training - a helpful step for many schools to ensure their staff can recognise and understand dyslexic learners and enable them within the classroom.

The monthly online support offers specialist topics each month for parents and teachers to gain ideas about how to best support dyslexic children. During the year they run additional free events to offer further support.

Visit the website, Facebook page, or Eventbrite, to find out more about the events happening right now.

If you would like to talk about any of the services, or get some friendly advice from one of the specialists, please get in touch.
