School websites and SEND page - a parents perspective

During PINS LPCF have explored with parents the information provided by schools on their websites and many parents indicated that they find the school SEND page can be useful but in some cases NOT.
A key component they identified was that whilst some were OK and a parent can go to the school SEND page, they often have to go to several parts of the site to get key SEND information.

Taking this feedback LPCF wanted to investigate the variety of SEND pages schools have, and found them to be extremely variable.

To analyse the variations, LPCF identified what a parent might be able to reasonably expect from a school SEND page and came up with 12 measures.
8 of these were simple yes or no if the information is included on the Website (wherever that may be) and the other 4 measures were a more subjective measure about plain English language, ease of discovery, signposting to key agencies etc.

Each PINS settings website was checked and scored.
Notes about the location or difficulty of discovery or broken links etc. were all noted. Each setting has been invited to see the rational framework, their scores and the analysis notes.

Progressing through the analysis LPCF concluded that many websites did have key information, however it was often scattered over many pages making discovery difficult for parents.
LPCF are of the belief that if the information is accessible then why is it not all in one place on the SEND page as direct information or links to the information.

Meeting with some SENCo’s they felt that the premis was interesting and could see the logic of having a standardised structure for school SEND pages to adopt. Further work is may be undertaken to move this forward and a number of schools have already taken their results and made changes.

For participating schools, if you have not already done so, please feel free to contact LPCF for your feedback sheet.
